Earn your Internal Audit Practitioner™ (IAP™) designation through the CIA part 1 exam and demonstrate your aptitude and foundational knowledge of The IIA Standards.
The IAP syllabi and exam have changed
Candidates pursuing the IAP designation will become certified by taking the CIA Part 1 exam.
The IAP is now a permanent designation with 20 hours of annual CPE required beginning in 2026.
The IAP exam is now available through a test center-only delivery model. Online proctoring has been discontinued to preserve the integrity of IIA certification programs and enhance the testing experience for all candidates.

Challenge Exam NBA
The Challenge Exam allows you to obtain the CIA designation after successfully passing a one-part examination. It evaluates the practical application of internal audit knowledge at an advanced level.
To meet the accounting CIA Challenge Exam eligibility requirements, you must be an active CPA or CA at Koninklijke Nederlandse Beroepsorganisatie van Accountants (NBA)™

Challenge Exam CISA
Active CISA™ holders can earn the CIA through the CIA Challenge Exam. The Challenge Exam allows you to obtain the CIA designation after successfully passing a one-part examination.

You must be an active holder of the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA™) designation.

Challenge Exam Professional
Experienced internal auditors can earn the CIA through a one-part exam. This Professional pathway is currently a pilot program. The pilot program is available in the June, September, and November 2026 testing windows.
Am I eligible for the CIA Challenge Exam as an experienced internal auditor?
You must have 7+ years of experience in:
- Internal Audit
- Quality Assurance
- Risk Management
- Audit/Assessment Disciplines
- Compliance
- External Audit
- Internal Control
The IIA reserves the right to verify employment history details shared in the experience verification form by contacting previous employers. Approval into the program is contingent upon the thorough and accurate completion of this form. The information in the experience verification form may be subject to audit at any time.
Professional CIA Challenge Exam
- Available to professionals with at least 7 years of experience in internal audit or related fields.
- Applications open 1 April 2026.
- 1 multiple-choice exam with 150 questions.
- 150 questions.
- 180-minute exam.
