IIA Introduces Delayed Scoring for Certification Exams
The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has announced an update to its certification exam scoring process. Effective in 2026, candidates will no longer receive a preliminary, unofficial score immediately after completing their exam. Instead, a single official result will be issued within three weeks of the exam date.
This change aligns with established practices in the assessment industry and is designed to enhance the reliability of exam results.
Focus on Quality Assurance and Exam Integrity
The updated approach introduces delayed scoring, meaning results are released only after all quality assurance and security checks have been completed.
According to the IIA, this process allows sufficient time to investigate potential irregularities and supports the integrity of the certification program. By issuing only one official result, the risk of discrepancies between preliminary and final scores is eliminated.
Implementation Timeline
The new scoring process will be implemented in phases:
- CIA, CRMA, and IAP candidates: effective for candidates with active applications from 1 April 2026
- CIA Challenge Exam candidates: effective from 1 February 2026
For all affected exams, candidates will receive their official results within three weeks of the exam date.
The IIA also notes that additional delays may occur for the June 2026 testing window due to the introduction of an updated exam.
Accessing Exam Results
Once results are available, candidates will receive an automated email notification. Results can also be accessed through the Candidate Certification Management System (CCMS) via Pearson VUE, where score reports are published.
