IIA Netherlands Releases Updated Ambition Model Application Guide

IIA Netherlands Aligns Ambition Model with New Global Internal Audit Standards

The Ambition Model has long been a valuable tool for internal auditors to assess and enhance the maturity of their audit functions. In light of the introduction of the Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS) in 2024, IIA Netherlands has updated the Ambition Model to reflect these new standards, which took effect on 9 January 2025. The latest Application Guide is now available, offering internal auditors enhanced resources to effectively utilize the Ambition Model.

Key updates

The revised Ambition Model is now fully aligned with the updated GIAS, incorporating significant changes that internal audit professionals can apply as they navigate the complexities of an ever-changing business landscape.

Additionally, the new Application Guide offers improved practical tools for self-assessment, benchmarking, and strategic planning. The updated structure simplifies the evaluation process and assists in defining developmental steps based on the five ambition levels: Initial, Infrastructure, Integrated, Managed, and Optimizing.

Integration with GIAS

With the implementation of the new Global Internal Audit Standards, effective from January 2025, updating the Ambition Model was essential. The revised version now provides a clear mapping to the GIAS, supporting audit functions in both complying with these standards and elevating their ambition and performance levels.

Implications for Your Audit Function

  • Self-Assessment: Internal audit functions can effectively evaluate their current status and identify areas for improvement.
  • Strategic Planning: The model aids in developing long-term strategies for the audit function.
  • Benchmarking: With sufficient user participation, the model enables performance comparisons with peers across various sectors.
  • External Quality Assessment (EQA): The updated version is optimized for external reviews and can be utilized in mandatory periodic quality assessments of audit functions.

Through this update, IIA Netherlands has provided a robust tool to ensure audit functions remain future-ready. The new Application Guide is now accessible to members of IIA Netherlands.
