IIA updates CIA Challenge Exam with new pathway and revised exam
The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has announced a series of updates to its CIA Challenge Exam program, aimed at expanding access to the international certification and aligning the exam with the Global Internal Audit Standards.
The changes are designed to make the CIA designation more accessible to experienced professionals, while ensuring that the exam reflects the current responsibilities and competencies required in today’s internal audit environment.
New experience-based pathway for senior professionals
As part of the update, the IIA is introducing a pilot for an experience-based eligibility pathway. This route is intended for professionals with ten or more years of experience in internal audit or related fields.
The pilot application window runs from April 1 through September 30, 2026. Eligible candidates are required to sit for the exam during one of the 2026 testing windows in June, September or November.
Unified exam aligned with Global Internal Audit Standards
Effective June 1, 2026, the CIA Challenge Exam will be offered as a single, unified exam for all candidates, regardless of their eligibility pathway. The updated exam is aligned with the Global Internal Audit Standards, ensuring that candidates are assessed against current professional practices.
Expanded eligibility and flexible application process
Eligibility for the CIA Challenge Exam has been broadened through the recognition of 17 additional accounting bodies. This expansion increases global accessibility for qualified candidates.
In addition, applications are now accepted year-round, replacing the previous fixed application windows. The exam is offered during four annual testing windows: February, June, September and November.
Testing and study resources
The June 2026 testing window will serve as a reference point for establishing the passing standard for the updated exam. Candidates who sit for the exam in June will receive their results within eight weeks.
Study materials are provided separately through The IIA’s official exam preparation partner, Becker, with plans to expand language availability over time.
What this means for experienced auditors
For experienced internal audit professionals, the updated CIA Challenge Exam provides an additional route to obtain the CIA designation. The introduction of the experience-based pathway and the alignment with the Global Internal Audit Standards reflect the evolving role of internal audit and the need for certification pathways that match professional experience.
For those preparing to take the next step, it can be valuable to review available study materials and supporting publications to structure and deepen exam preparation.
