New Global Guidance: Coordination and Reliance in Assurance Activities

Organizations often engage multiple assurance providers to address the wide range of risks identified during their risk assessments. Effective coordination between the internal audit function and these providers enhances both efficiency and risk coverage.

A newly released Global Guidance, aligned with the Global Internal Audit StandardsTM, outlines a practical approach for chief audit executives to coordinate risk assessments and align assurance efforts across the organization. This includes clearly documenting the level of assurance each provider offers for different risk areas.

The guidance also presents a method for evaluating the extent to which internal audit may rely on the work of other assurance providers.

Two IIA Audit Tools are available exclusively to IIA members alongside this practice guide:

  • Assurance Mapping
  • Reliance Assessment

This publication replaces and builds upon content from earlier guidance, including “Coordination and Reliance: Developing an Assurance Map” (2018), “Coordinating Risk Management and Assurance” (2012), and “Reliance by Internal Audit on Other Assurance Providers” (2011).

The practice guide is now available for IIA members.
