Young professionals explore the future of internal audit

What does the future of internal audit ask of the next generation of auditors? On 10 September, young professionals came together for the Young Professional Inspiration Day, organised by IIA Netherlands in collaboration with Protiviti Netherlands.

The programme approached the profession from three perspectives: the HUMAN Auditor, the TECHNOLOGICAL Auditor and the Auditor of the FUTURE. Throughout the afternoon, participants discussed how human skills, technological developments and changes within organisations are shaping the work of internal auditors.

Human judgement and technology

Technology is becoming increasingly relevant to the way internal auditors work. During the programme, participants explored the role AI can play in internal audit and what this means for the auditor. Technology can provide new capabilities, but professional judgement and human skills remain important when assessing situations, asking the right questions and communicating with stakeholders.

An interactive crisis management session put participants in a situation where developments required them to respond and make decisions. This provided a practical setting for discussing the use of technology and the choices professionals face when circumstances change quickly.

Three perspectives from audit leaders

The Auditor of the FUTURE was also discussed from the perspective of current audit leaders. Three Heads of Internal Audit from the non-profit, healthcare and commercial sectors shared their experiences with the participants.

Their different professional environments provided a broad basis for the conversation. What developments do they see within their organisations? Which skills do they value in auditors? And what can young professionals expect as they develop their careers in internal audit?

There was plenty of opportunity for participants to ask their own questions and discuss the differences and similarities between internal audit functions across sectors.

Connecting young professionals

Professional development is not limited to the formal programme. Meeting other young professionals and exchanging experiences are equally important elements of the Young Professional Inspiration Day. After the sessions, participants, speakers and organisers continued their conversations over drinks and bites.
