Lean and Agile Auditing for Internal Auditors

Practical approaches to new ways of internal auditing (updated)

An opportunity to look at progressive ways of working using lean and agile techniques. This is especially important since the new GIAS highlights the need to i) add value, ii) drive efficiency and iii) work on root causes.

Specific areas covered

•    Look at adding value, going back to first principles, using the Lean kano approach around satisfiers, delighters and dissatisfiers
•    Think efficiency from first principles using the principles of lean such as Mura, Muri, Muda (linked to waste);
•    Defining reasonable assurance – prioritising scope and assignment delivery using SIPOC and an audit on a page
•    How to approach testing, using data analytics and knowing when to stop (intelligent flexibility)
•    A brief introduction to Root Cause Analysis, which is required in the new GIAS
•    Ways to drive the audit closing, reporting, follow-up processes and post assignment learning. Targeting shorter reports with under 10 pages and 5/7 findings.
•    Effective metrics for audit - getting assignments delivered to time and budget
•    Behaviours that change when an audit team is lean and agile; managing change without disrupting assignment delivery.

Got a lot out of the course, very informative. Learnt a lot. I'm more likely to attend virtual courses now. [The course was] very focused with plenty of breaks. Pace was perfect [and] delegates had time to speak.
